SPB Software is ready to introduce the results of the 7th Annual SPB Survey. As the situation on the mobile market keeps changing all the time we aim to stay updated and tell you about the latest trends. What are the current user’s preferences and expectations? How important is the platform of the mobile device and which platform is the most popular among users? For which applications are the users ready to pay? The answers of up to 15 000 users that took part in the SPB Survey 2010 to this and many other questions are summed up below with our comments.

The feedback you provided in your answers will help us to make our current and future products better. We are thankful to all the survey participants and to our partners that helped us to make survey results even more relevant.

This year HTC HD2 becomes the №1 device among the survey participants. And though new Nokia N8 and HTC Desire have really gained their popularity this year they are still several steps behind the widespread Apple iPhone 4 while Nokia 5800 smartphone on Symbian OS still remains the main popular device.

PLATFORM

Platform is really important for the users today (91% of respondents confirm this)

Most popular previously used platforms are Windows Mobile (66%) and Symbian (41%). They are still widespread today. But the number of users that keep using these platforms has significantly declined (Windows Mobile - 53%, Symbian – 22%).

Almost the half of all respondents (45%) would prefer Android to other platforms when buying the new device. The second popular platform is Windows Phone 7 (29%). Surprisingly, iOS is the most preferred platform only among the iPhone users. Android, Bada, Blackberry, Feature Phone, Symbian and Windows Mobile users would choose Android platform in future. iOS, Maemo, Palm and Windows Phone 7 users would stay with their platforms in future.

Most of those respondents that are now using different platforms turned to them from Windows Mobile. 79% of Maemo and 72% of Symbian users had devices on Symbian OS before.

The most unpopular platforms among users are: BlackBerry (18%) and Symbian (18%).

Android, Bada, Blackberry, Feature Phone, Symbian and Windows Mobile users would choose Android platform buying the next device. iOS, Maemo, Palm and Windows Phone 7 users would stay with their platforms.

The most valued and liked characteristics of the platform are functionality, availability of free apps, apps quality and design.

Functionality, apps quality, app store and design are most valued in iOS. Availibility of free apps and widgets are liked mostly by Android users. The devices are more available on the market for Symbian users. Mobile device price is best for bada users, simplicity – for Palm users.

Participants are satisfied with the built-in Wi-Fi, GPS, Big screen, Bluetooth, Functionality and design in their mobile devices.

Low battery (53%) and low memory (30%) are the most disliked device features. Instability (28%) and high price (28%) are also the factors of dissatisfaction.

SOFTWARE

The users choose Maps and GPS (72%), weather (62%) and browsers/Internet utilities (62%) as necessary to have on the device.

The most popular software categories are entertainment software (24%), information (news, weather, translator) – 18% and system tools (16%)

Software is mostly downloaded from developer's website or on-device Application Store. Native on-device stores (44%) are used much more often than third-party stores (32%)

On average users download around 2-5 apps per month. Android, iOS and Maemo users download more apps than others. Windows Mobile and BlackBerry users download less than people with devices on other platforms.

When the users choose whether to pay for an app or to use a free software with ads, they would still prefer the paid software. However it differs a lot depending on the country. Android, Symbian and Feature phone users claim that they would prefer to download apps for free with ad support.

The majority of users protect their data and do the backup

TABLETS

32% of the smartphone users that have taken part in the survey have already used the tablet device. Among those who have used the tablet before 34% are going to buy it. Those who haven’t used it are more skeptical: 67% of them are not going to buy it.

The majority of participants believe that the use of the tablet device won’t significantly reduce the need for an advanced smartphone. And most of them think that the interface of the tablet device should be somehow different from the interface of the smartphone.
