1. What is Spb Backup for?

Spb Backup is an application for creating reserve copies of data on your Pocket PC or migrating your data to another device. You can create self-extracting compressed executables, thus making backup and restore processes very simple and intuitive.

2. What is so special in Spb Backup?

Spb Backup is a very intuitive application that doesn't require any special skills. Moreover, it allows you to create a backup copy of the whole Pocket PC content as well as of any part of it. You can require automatic encryption and compression of your backup copies. You create backup copies directly on a storage card. Starting with version 2 it allows you to restore your data after ROM upgrade or on another device. With the desktop Backup Sync tool you can save your backups on desktop in automatic manner for later archive review or restoring on another device.

3. Can I create a backup copy of some particular items?

Sure. When you launch the program, select that you want to perform a custom backup and specify the content.

4. What is the difference between Spb Clone and Spb Backup applications?

Spb Backup is usually used by single end-users for their personal needs. When someone needs to create a reserve copy of his Pocket PC data, he uses Spb Backup. Spb Clone is mostly used by companies for fast configuring a number of identical devices with similar data, files, and settings.

5. Are there any important details regarding ActiveSync partnership after restore?

Yes. Please make sure to restore data on your Pocket PC before performing synchronization. Otherwise the existing partnership will be killed by ActiveSync.

6. When a scheduled backup is performed automatically the device is rebooted. After the reboot my device asks for entering the PIN code. If I don't enter the PIN code in time (e.g. at night), does that mean that I will miss all incoming phone calls?

We don't want you to miss any phone calls! To prohibit the device reboot after the backup, please, customize the corresponding option in Spb Backup application:

  • Open the program, select the Scheduled Backup checkbox, tap Next.
  • In the next dialog box you are proposed to configure the backup schedule. Please make sure to keep the "Automatically reboot after backup" checkbox unselected.

7. How to restore?

With Spb Backup 1.0 you can do it in the following way:

  • Open File Explorer on your Pocket PC device.
  • Browse to the folder the where you saved the backup copy (usually the storage card root folder)
  • Run the backup executable. Provide the password if asked.

With Spb Backup 2.0 we suggest two additional ways to restore:

  • From the main screen of Spb Backup choose the "Restore backup" item and browse for your backup file on the storage card or internal storage.
  • Browse to the folder the where you saved the backup copy (usually the storage card root folder)
  • Or with the Sync tool on your desktop select the archive to restore and click the right-button context menu "Restore" item, then follow the instructions on the device.

8. How to synchronize the backup file with the desktop?

If you use Spb Backup 1.0 you can place your backups into the "My Documents" folder. They will be synchronized with your desktop via ActiveSync. For Spb Backup 2.0 we introduced the desktop Backup Sync utility which is a part of desktop installation of Spb Backup. Just configure the connection with your device and your backups will be copied automatically to the selected folder under "My DocumentsMy Device Backups" folder.

9. Can I view the content of my archive?

Yes, Spb Backup 2.0 comes with Spb Unpack utility which allows not only view the backup file content but also export the separate files or registry values. What is more important, it allows to export tasks and calendar items as well as text messages (SMS) to a text file.

10. How to perform backup so I could restore it on another device?

Spb Backup doesn't require any special actions to perform data for restoring on another device or after ROM upgrade. Just make the full backup as usual. The restoring utility will automatically detect that it is restoring on another device and will suggest to use an appropriate restore mode: ROM upgrade or device upgrade.
